Join UMOCA on March 24 from 6 – 9 p.m. for the opening of our two new exhibitions, Justin Chouinard’s These Ribbons Are Substratum and Gary Jacobson’s Some Thoughts. Following the artists’ talks, the Waterford School invites you to enjoy “At the Heart of Who We Are,” a conversation with photographer Burk Uzzle. After his discussion, filmmakers David Raymond and Jethro Waters will present their trailer for “f/11 and be there,” a feature length documentary about Burk.
Justin Chouinard introduces the ghosts of experience past in his exhibition, These Ribbons Are Substratum. Manipulating film slides and loops by hand, Chouinard exposes the skin of the image and reveals the bones of cinema. Examine wrinkled sheets of memory and images that are reminiscent pieces of light in the A-I-R Space from March 17 to April 22.
Gary Jacobson’s “Some Thoughts” is comprised of anthropomorphized animal sculptures that live within a mysterious narrative shaped by Jacobson’s subconscious. These animals, created from unfired clay, alternate between humor, empathy, and malice in a loosely rendered, dream-like wold that feels both familiar and foreign. Explore the exciting narratives of Jacobson’s creatures in the Projects Gallery from March 24 to May 6.
Burk Uzzle’s photographs are distinct—of a different place, time in our history, and social theme. For more information, visit burkuzzle.com
