The Hinckley Institute Radio Hour (Air date: December 30, 2015) — In early December a group of social work administrators met to discuss the problem of intergenerational poverty in Utah. This describes the unfortunate cycle where poor parents have poor children, who are more likely to become poor adults themselves. The Utah Department of Workforce Services says 31 percent of Utah’s child population remains at risk for remaining in poverty as adults. Social workers with the state and nearby universities have been studying the problem, and how to end it, and they recently released a 4th Annual Report for the State of Utah.
Speaking is Tracy Gruber, Director of the Office of Child Care, at the Utah Department of Workforce Services, and Senior Advisor of the Intergenerational Poverty Initiative; John Pierpont, Executive Director, Utah Department of Workforce Services; and Ben Gibbs, an assistant professor in Sociology at Brigham Young University.
