The Hinckley Institute Radio Hour (Original air date: December 17, 2014) – Utah is home to 50,000 refugees, with the vast majority residing in Salt Lake County. Refugees are becoming an important demographic in the community, but their stories are rarely told and their own small communities are not well understood by native Utahns. A panel of advocates and refugee immigrants discussed issues that Utah’s refugees face on November 11, 2014.
Raul Yumul is the Volunteer Coordinator with Catholic Community Services; Beth Garstka is Community Outreach Director for the English Skills Learning Center that serves adult immigrants and refugees whose first language is not English; Alex Ngenakuriyo is a community leader from Burundi who grew up as a refugee and has lived in the U.S. for the last 7 years. The moderator is Gunner Knecks, a student at the University of Utah.
