Today we take a walking tour of the Geraldine E. King Women’s Resource Center. The center, which will be operational at the end of the month, is one of three, new homeless resource centers set to open soon in Salt Lake County. Beyond offering beds for 200 homeless women, it will also have a number of on-site case managers or service-providers helping with things like housing, employment, and addiction treatment. It’s part of a much-anticipated new model for tackling homelessness in Utah. At the core of that model is the idea of siloing the homeless population into smaller, and ostensibly more manageable, subsets. But with the impending closure of the downtown Road Home shelter, will there be enough beds to go around? And will there be enough affordable housing to both prevent further homelessness, and to house people currently on the streets?
