Snags in the rollout of Utah’s medical cannabis program, and the path forward

Play

Utah’s plan for rolling out medical marijuana is in flux. Last week, two Utah county attorneys advised the health departments in their counties not to distribute medical cannabis. They said that by participating in the state’s distribution scheme, those health departments would be in violation of federal law, and could be at risk of losing federal funding as a result. Meanwhile, after the state granted cannabis growing licenses to eight businesses, they faced challenges from some of the entities not selected. Now, a special session of the legislature could be coming to address these and other challenges stemming from the Utah plan that replaced the voter-approved Proposition 2. Today, an overview of where things stand now for medical marijuana in Utah.

Guests:
Andrew Rigby, director of Medical Cannabis and Industrial Hemp Programs for the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food
Doug Rice, community liaison with Together for Responsible Use and Cannabis Education (TRUCE)
Sim Gill, Salt Lake County District Attorney
