In the Hive

Previewing the 2020 Utah Legislative Session

Play

The 2020 Utah Legislative Session runs from January 27th to March 12th, and during those 45 days lawmakers will settle on a budget for the coming year and will likely consider well over a thousand bills. Some proposals will impact the way you lead your life, touching on everything from affordable housing to air quality. Others will fund programs you’ve never heard of, or send messages to Utah’s congressional delegation in Washington.

Today on In the Hive, we get a legislative preview from three people who work for nonprofit organizations that try to influence what happens at the legislature. They are lobbyists, indeed. But as representatives of their respective nonprofits they say they are lobbying to make a difference for the public good.

Editor’s note: This program was recorded before news broke that the governor and the legislature plan to repeal the massive tax reform they passed in a December special session.

Guests:
Marina Lowe, Legislative and Policy Counsel with ACLU of Utah
Katie Matheson, Communications Director with Alliance for a Better Utah
Deeda Seed, Senior Utah Field Campaigner with the Center for Biological Diversity
