(KCPW News) Utah's retail marketplace is taking casualties in the national recession. Earlier this month, 8,000 Bally Total Fitness members were given no warning that the Sugar House and Midvale gyms were closing. And just in time for holiday shopping, Circuit City announced it was closing stores, laying off workers and filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. KCPW's Elizabeth Ziegler asks the state government's consumer protections guru, Francine Giani, how to protect purchases and avoid holiday scams in such uncertain financial times.
If in doubt, Francine Giani recommends consumers seek advice from state agencies, including the one she heads, the Utah Division of Consumer Protections. More information about the division is online at utah.gov.
