(KCPW News) Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon has proposed $13 million dollars in budget cuts to help the county get through a fiscal crisis without having to raise property taxes. But County Council Chairman Joe Hatch says the cuts will not be enough to avoid a property tax hike, which the council has already approved, because most of those cuts don't apply until next year.
"There's a mismatch between what is being proposed and the tax. The taxes help us in 2009, the budget cuts are not until 2010," he told KCPW.
Hatch says only about 10 percent of Mayor Corroon's proposed cuts will actually help the county in 2009. He says he's willing to look at additional cuts in order to avoid a tax increase, but they have to apply to this fiscal year. The county council is discussing the cuts with the mayor this afternoon.
