Utah Legislature Restores Full Funding for New Century Scholarship
08.18.2009 by Jeff Robinson
(KCPW News) State lawmakers had good news today for high-achieving Utah students who are about to start college. They’ve decided to restore funding to the New Century Scholarship Program. Now, every participating student will get 75 percent of their tuition at Utah’s colleges and universities paid for, as they had been promised, instead of 40 percent. Speaker of the House of Representatives David Clark made the announcement at the Capitol.
“Earlier today, the majority legislative leadership and Governor Herbert instructed the Utah Board of Regents to fully fund the New Century Scholarship,” he said. “The past week, both sides of the aisle have provided constructive input in trying to come up with a solution.”
The New Century Scholarship Program, which is good for up to 60 college credits, was established 10 years ago. It’s available to students who earn an associate’s degree or complete certain math and science requirements by September of the year they graduate high school. The board of regents will notify students within three days that their scholarships will be fully funded.
Senate Minority Leader Pat Jones applauded the decision to fully fund the program.
“This is just one of many examples of the value of government programs that directly affect peoples lives, and how important some of those programs are in helping to reach those students who are willing to work hard and enhance their lives,” she said.
The New Century Scholarship Program received an 8 percent cut from state lawmakers earlier this year.
