Lawmaker Provides More Perspective on Legislative Compensation
09.03.2009 by Jeff Robinson
(KCPW News) Earlier this week, we talked with Democratic State Representative Neil Hansen about the issue of legislative pay. Hansen, the only lawmaker in the House of Representatives who voted against taking a 10 percent paycut earlier this year, believes state lawmakers should be salaried employees in order to compensate them for all the work they do outside the legislative session. He also believes lawmakers are justified in pocketing the per diem reimbursements they receive for food and lodging in cases where they don’t actually spend it. Today, to get a different perspective on legislative compensation, KCPW’s Jeff Robinson spoke with Democratic State Representative Rebecca Chavez-Houck, who represents downtown Salt Lake City.
