(KCPW News) It’s been nearly 11 years since Matthew Shepard was tortured and murdered in Wyoming for being gay. Since then, his death has sparked a vigorous debate over hate crime legislation. But right now, targeting someone for being gay is not considered a hate crime on the federal level. Judy Shepard, Matthew’s mother and president of the board of the Matthew Shepard Foundation, is trying to change this. She stopped at the Salt Lake City Main Library on Saturday as part of a tour for her book, The Meaning of Matthew. Here’s an excerpt from her talk.
