DA Lohra Miller Discusses D.J. Bell Case in Exclusive Interview

10.15.2009 by Jeff Robinson

(KCPW News) Salt Lake County District Attorney Lohra Miller and the South Salt Lake Police Department have been the target of heavy criticism since South Salt Lake resident David James Bell was acquitted of kidnapping charges.  Questions remain about why the people who allegedly attacked Bell and his partner, Dan Fair, have not yet been charged with a crime, despite what appears to be strong evidence that a vicious assault occurred.  Hoping to get answers to those questions, KCPW’s Jeff Robinson spoke with the District Attorney about the case in this exclusive interview.

  1. I think Lohra Miller is trying to cover her fanny, so to speak, since she royally screwed up. She mentions a “critical witness that couldn’t be secured”. It wouldn’t matter who that was; DJ Bell was/is innocent, and he would have been proven innocent no matter who they had on the stand. Many of their “witnesses” actually gave evidence that helped D J’s case, and many of their witnesses contradicted each other. It was so obvious that there was no evidence. As Roger Kraft, DJ’s attorney, said at the preliminary hearing, there was just no evidence. The judge, Paul Maughn, said he realized that the burden of proof was low, but he was going to go ahead and bind it over for trial. It was obvious at the trial that Judge Maughn was against DJ–VERY obvious!! He as well seemed to have his mind made up that DJ was guilty. It is amazing how incompetent these people are and yet they are public officials! The day after Lohra Miller announced (Aug. 2008) that they wouldn’t be filing charges against DJ’s neighbors, another gay man was beaten by a Polynesian man and it broke his orbital bone, and he had to have surgery as Dan Fair, DJ’s partner, did. So, the DA is saying it’s OK to beat up gay men because you won’t be charged with anything.
