Free Parking Returns for the Holidays

11.25.2009 by Jeff Robinson

(KCPW News) You can put away those quarters as you do your shopping this holiday season.  Parking will once again be free of charge at 2,100 meters across Salt Lake City, including the downtown area, until New Year’s Day.  Mayor Ralph Becker made the announcement this morning.

“This is a way to reward our retailers for hanging in there with us in these tough times, but also to make sure everyone knows that downtown Salt Lake City welcomes folks coming to enjoy and frequent our businesses,” Becker said.

The free parking will cost the city about $225,000 in lost revenues from parking meters and ticketing.

But Jason Mathis, Executive Director of the Downtown Alliance, says it will create a significant boost in business activity.

“It’s a significant amount of money that the city gives in lost parking revenue, which makes it really, really valuable for us,” said Mathis.  “It does really encourage a lot of people to come downtown.”

The free parking meters will be covered by bright yellow bags for the holiday season.  The two-hour time limit is still in effect.
