(KCPW News) Santa Claus and a group of health reform advocates sang Christmas carols at the Federal Building in downtown Salt Lake City this morning, urging Senators Orrin Hatch and Bob Bennett to vote for the Democrats’ health care bill. They’re dreaming of a health care Christmas, and instead of “figgy pudding,” they want bipartisanship and a healthy new year.
“I’m Dreaming of a Health Care Christmas”
“We Wish You a Merry Christmas and a Healthy New Year”
The half-dozen carolers were part of the Democratic National Committee’s Organizing for America project. They gave Hatch and Bennett’s staff bags of coal and 1,500 personal health care stories collected over the past week. Kristin Garbett explained why they staged the event while flipping through the thick stack of health stories the group had compiled.
“We see that health care bill waved around in Washington D.C. We want people to understand that we have a lot that we’re waiving around here, too, just in our very Republican state of Utah,” Garbett said. “This isn’t about partisan politics, this is about people of Utah that desperately need health care reform.”
Hatch and Bennett’s staff met briefly with the carolers and said they would pass along their message and health care stories. Both senators are vocal opponents of the Democrats’ health reform proposal on the verge of being passed in the Senate.
