Adventurer Helen Thayer Describes Her Trek with Charlie

(KCPW News) Global adventurer and New Zealand native Helen Thayer was the first woman to make a solo trip to the magnetic North Pole in 1988, when she was 50 years old. But although she had no human companions on her adventure, she did have the aid of her dog, Charlie. Tonight, Thayer will open the 2010 Nature of Things Lecture Series at the Salt Lake Center for Science Education. KCPW’s Jeff Robinson spoke with her to learn more about her many adventures.
Helen Thayer is a global adventurer and author of Polar Dream: The First Solo Expedition by a Woman and Her Dog to the Magnetic North Pole. Tonight at 7, she’ll open the 2010 Nature of Things Lecture Series, presented by the Utah Museum of Natural History. The event will be held at the Salt Lake Center for Science Education in Rose Park. It’s free and open to the public, or you can catch the live broadcast on NPR Utah, KCPW at 7 p.m. It will also stream live on this web site.
