Most Gallivan Center Events Won’t Be Moved During Renovation

(KCPW News) The Gallivan Center in downtown Salt Lake City will continue hosting popular events during the course of its renovation. D.J. Baxter, Executive Director of the Salt Lake City Redevelopment Agency, says although the Twilight Concert Series is moving to a new location, most events will proceed with only modest interruptions from the construction.
“A number of the other regularly scheduled events at the Gallivan Center will continue this year but perhaps in a little bit different configuration,” he said. “Likely they will be either off to one side of the plaza or down on Gallivan Avenue just to the south of the Gallivan Plaza.”
Baxter adds that the Rock N’ Ribs event will be postponed until 2011. Renovations include moving and enlarging the ice skating rink, which will be completed in time for the annual “Lights On” celebration in November. Most importantly, Baxter says, it will able to accommodate more patrons.
“There will be about two-and-a-half times as much grassy space from which people can sit and watch concerts and have a good view of the stage,” said Baxter. “Right now the area that’s just immediately in front of the stage, that area will expand farther to the north and become wider as well to create a clear line of sight for a much, much larger number of people who are watching the stage.”
The $7.5 million project will be completed in April 2011. Big-D Construction was selected as the contractor for the project, as the lowest bidder. Meanwhile, the Salt Lake City Arts Council will announce the location of this year’s Twilight Concert Series this Thursday.
