(KCPW News) Upset with the Salt Lake City Council’s decision to continue to allow dog owners to let their pets run off-leash on the south side of Parley’s Historic Nature Park, Mayor Ralph Becker officially vetoed the council’s decision today.
The veto was expected because the council’s plan did not address water contamination and land degradation issues. Becker is also concerned the plan did not include an area in the park where dogs weren’t allowed to run off-leash.
Becker says an interim management plan will be put in place while he and the council work to find common ground on the issue. It would take five votes to override Becker’s veto. The plan was passed with the support of only four council members. The council will decide next week whether or not to override the veto.
