Report Says Salt Lake City Is Fifth Worst Polluted

Three Utah cities rank amongst the ten worst in the nation when it comes to wintertime air pollution, according to a new report from the American Lung Association.

(KCPW News)  Three Utah cities rank amongst the ten worst in the nation when it comes to wintertime air pollution, according to a new report from the American Lung Association.

Salt Lake City, Provo, and Logan rank fifth, sixth, and ninth, respectively, on a list of 277 cities ranked for the particle pollutant PM 2.5.  The report says this puts more than 2.4 million Utahns at risk of health complications.

It also lists three counties in the state, Salt Lake, Utah, and Cache amongst the worst eleven.

The report says the pollution comes from burning fossil fuels, as well as dust storms and agricultural, construction, and mining operations.

Meanwhile, no Utah cities or counties are listed in the worst 25 for ozone pollution, which occurs primarily in the summer months.
