(KCPW News) Friday morning, Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker made his re-election bid official, filing with the city recorder to run for a second term. The filing period opened Friday, and no other contenders have said they are challenging him. Becker, a former state lawmaker, says he’s never been in a race where there is only one candidate this far in the game.

“I am very appreciative that I have very broad based support in the community and that we have been able to do a lot with Salt Lake City,” Becker said.  “If the lack of a major candidate in the race is a reflection of that then I think it speaks to how we as a city are governed.”

Mayor Becker says he started knocking on doors six weeks ago, and plans to keep doing so throughout the campaign. He says he hopes to see the city continue to grow by expanding downtown and public transit. The filing period to run for office in Salt Lake City runs through July 15th.
