New Billboard Aimed at Atheists, Nonreligious Utahns

A billboard aimed at atheists and non-religious Utahns is now up along a popular Salt Lake City highway. The Utah Coalition of Reason, an alliance of non-theist groups across the state, put up the sign, which reads “Don’t believe in God? You are not alone.” Elaine Ball, director of the group, hopes the billboard makes their community more visible.

(KCPW News) A billboard aimed at atheists and non-religious Utahns is now up along a popular Salt Lake City highway. The Utah Coalition of Reason, an alliance of non-theist groups across the state, put up the sign, which reads “Don’t believe in God? You are not alone.” Elaine Ball, director of the group, hopes the billboard makes their community more visible.

“The message of the billboard is really geared toward letting Utahns who do not identify with religion or theistic beliefs, who don’t necessarily believe in a God, letting them know that they aren’t alone, and that they have a community of people who are waiting to welcome them with open arms,” she tells KCPW.

The billboard is placed on the north side of Highway 201 near the Utah State Fairgrounds. Ball says it will come down after the fair, but the organizations plans to continue its outreach efforts in the future.

“During this billboard campaign we’re actually going to be having exhibit booths at the Avenues and the 9th and 9th street fairs,” she says. “It was too late of notice for us to get into the State Fair this year, but we are hoping very much to increase our community presence over the years., to be in the State Fair, to be at the Farmers Market, to be out and visible in the community.”

Ball says the group has received nothing but positive feedback since the billboard went up earlier this week.
