(KCPW News) Utah courts could not consider gender, age, race, national origin, color or religion when deciding a child custody case in a divorce situation, under a bill that unanimously passed the Utah House of Representatives today. Representative Jennifer Seelig said biases that occur in government institutions are reflected in our culture, and this bill will help change that.
“I appreciate the sponsor’s efforts in trying to change all of our hearts and minds related to a male’s ability to parent lovingly and effectively,” said Seelig.
The bill’s sponsor, Representative Ryan Wilcox, is seeking the change after learning of a case where a drug-addicted mother was given custody of a child over the father. That child later died in a car accident when the mother suffered a drug-induced blackout while driving. House Bill 88 now moves to the Senate.
