(KCPW News) Thousands of Salt Lake City voters are fighting for a separation of corporation and state. This morning, over 11,000 signatures were turned in to Salt Lake County asking for a resolution that would say corporations are not people and money is not speech. Elise Lazar who helped coordinate the event says Salt Lake City is one of 91 cities involved in the movement.
“The Supreme Court made a decision in 2010 called Citizens United which gave personhood to corporations and made money a form of free speech and SuperPacs have developed where corporations are giving hundreds of millions of dollars to our candidates and our elected officials with the results being that instead of them representing us, they are representing corporate interests,” says Lazar.
With the signatures collected, the group now hopes to get the resolution on the November ballot.
“It will be just a statement for the City of Salt Lake but then we are going to go out to the county, and then out to the entire state,” says Lazar. “What we want ultimately and this is being done all across America, we want a constitutional Amendment that says corporations are not people and money is not a form of free speech.”
Organizers from Move to Amend say this is the first successful ballot initiative drive in city history.
