(KCPW News) A series of community workshops running now through next Tuesday focuses on Salt Lake City’s Granary District, the area just south of downtown encompassing several blocks between West Temple and I-15. Christian Harrison, Chair of the Downtown Community Council, says planners have identified the Granary District as an opportunity to re-invigorate a key area close to downtown.
“And by doing that, both government entities, non-governmental entities and developers believe that they can get the biggest bang for their buck because they can develop near downtown which is vibrant, exciting and has already seen some turnover and some renewal,” he says.
Harrison says for the Granary District to realize its full potential, there are several improvements that could be made.
“There’s no grocery store, there’s not a lot of child care, we definitely need a couple more coffee shops, so there are amenities that are missing,” he says. “Some of the roads, frankly, are in bad repair. 4th West, especially, has been grossly neglected. And then the connection to the rest of downtown, which is why the area is so keen on seeing a streetcar.”
The workshops are being organized by The Kentlands Initiative, a nonprofit urban development organization.
