(KCPW News) The Sugar House streetcar line stretching from the heart of the Salt Lake City neighborhood to the TRAX station on 2100 South will be lined with green space, thanks to a vote of the city council Tuesday night. Council Chair Soren Simonsen, who represents the neighborhood, says the nearly $7 million dollars in funding will contribute to a grand vision.
“The Parley’s Trail will run on the north side of the streetcar, the north half of the corridor,” he explains. “The south side of the corridor, south of the tracks, is envisioned as more of a landscaped greenway area. There will be a much smaller pathway that will be kind of a crushed gravel path.”
The councilman notes this greenway would run from about 1100 East to 5th East, and what happens from there will be up to South Salt Lake.
Simonsen says without this enhancement, the streetcar line would look a lot like TRAX.
“And TRAX is great for getting people from point A to point B, from one station to the next, but if you look at what that corridor is itself, it’s not a real attractive place,” says the council chair.
Simonsen says the project is expected to be finished or nearly finished by the end of summer 2013.
