(KCPW News) Later this summer, Utah will decide whether to pursue hosting the Olympic Winter Games for a second time. A key supporter of that bid is the University of Utah, especially if the school can gain access to neighboring Fort Douglas for Olympic venues. But as KCPW’s Jessica Gail reports, Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Peter Cooke says now is not the time to lose military land.

All due respect, I believe the military would be honored to temporarily give access to Fort Douglas in support of an event which showcases and honors both our great state and nation. Why shouldn’t we give access in order to house people acting toward the betterment of all? Or to enable an administrative area in support of such an endeavour? I should think Gen. Cooke would be better off holding those who attempt to cause a soldier to need to refuse deployment in time of war accountable under 18 USC 115 2388.
Using Fort Douglas for the Olympics would only impede the everyday functioning of the U.S. reserve military forces at Fort Douglas. The Utah Capital grounds could be used instead–not much happening up there, or classes at the U of U could be suspended and its facilities turned over to the Olympics. The students would love that.
