(KCPW News) Utah’s LGBT community will soon have a larger presence in downtown Salt Lake City. Valerie Larabee, Executive Director of the Utah Pride Center, says the center is planning to move from the Marmalade district into a 16,000-square foot building on 400 South and 300 East next spring.
“We love this location, but we don’t own the facilities that we’re housed in,” Larabee said. “We lease them on an annual basis, and we’ve just absolutely outgrown them. And our staff has expanded; we had two and a half people on board, including myself, in 2004, and now we have seventeen people.”
Larabee says the new location will come with several improvements, including more space for public outreach.
“You’ll be able to come in off of the sidewalk and grab a cup of coffee and have several thousand square feet of place where you can locate yourself,” Larabee said. “We’re going to have dedicated space for our mental health project; we have a space dedicated with counseling rooms.”
The building was purchased with a loan from an anonymous donor. The center is now fundraising to pay that loan back before moving in
