(KCPW News) The Quail Fire burning in Alpine has scorched just under 2,000 acres as of Wednesday evening and is 5 percent contained, according to the Bureau of Land Management’s Cami Lee. She says it’s not yet clear when the fire will be fully under control.

“We’re going to be fighting this for a few days because the terrain is really steep and really gnarly. They haven’t given us an estimated containment date yet, so we’re keeping it at 5 percent until we kind of get a feel for what the winds are going to do, what the fire’s going to do,” she says.

Lee says there were about 300 fire personnel battling the flames Wednesday, adding a federal Type 2 crew will be taking over today.

“So we’re going to have more resources, more overhead, more crews who are going to be helping with the fire,” she explains.

Evacuations were lifted for some homes in Alpine Wednesday, but others remain in place. The fire has destroyed a barn, but no homes.
