(KCPW News) Salt Lake County announced Thursday its plans to begin collecting public input on the future development of Parleys, Big Cottonwood, and Little Cottonwood Canyons. County Mayor Peter Corroon says plans haven’t been updated in many years, and says he intends for the new plans to be updated annually.
“We are trying to make them living documents. Every year we will go and update these general plans,” says Corroon. “We are going to create a big picture of what it should look like with some general principals and on an annual basis look at projects that are coming to our attention that need to be addressed in the general plan.”
The plans will focus on future environmental concerns, as well as transportation and recreation in the canyons. Corroon says the county wants to hear from anyone who uses the canyons, including industries and businesses that are located in the canyons. Salt Lake Valley Board of Health Member Sam Granato, a Democratic candidate for county council, says the canyons are an important resource and encourages people to get involved in the planning.
“I support it for my children and my grandchildren, and everyone else. I think for natural beauty and for the tourists it helps brings in and I just want to help protect it for the watershed and air quality,” says Granato.
An open house to discuss future plans for the canyons will be held August 9 from 5:00 to 6:30 pm at the Mill Creek Community Center.
