(KCPW News) Mayors throughout the Salt Lake Valley are lending their support to Millcreek Township residents who want to incorporate this November. West Valley City Mayor Mike Winder, who is president of the Salt Lake Valley Conference of Mayors, says the group passed a resolution last week offering its support.
“For years, there’s been a bit of a disconnect between the cities and the county in that the county is both a regional services provider, which includes all the cities, but it’s also a municipal service provider for a populated part of the valley,” he says. “It’s in the best interest of cities to have populated areas become parts of cities, and so we’re watching the Millcreek incorporation with great interest.”
The resolution says the conference of mayors respects that Millcreek residents have the right to determine themselves whether to incorporate, but adds that it supports “wall-to-wall cities in Salt Lake County.”
“When our Salt Lake County Council and County Mayor are focusing on how many kitty cats a home in Kearns should have, or where you should allow on-street or off-street parking in Millcreek, those are municipal issues. Let that be handled by the municipality, and we want our county government to be focused on regional issues that affect all of us,” says Winder.
Winder says Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon cast the only dissenting vote on the resolution, wanting to remain neutral on whether Millcreek incorporates.
