Salt Lake County launched a website today designed to provide information to Millcreek Township residents prior to November’s incorporation vote, and representatives from both sides of the issue used the occasion to argue several points, including whether Millcreek will continue to use Unified Police and Fire Department services if the community incorporates.
“That decision will be made by the council elect, and this man cannot make any guarantees about what those people are going to do. So that’s why we think we have an enormous disagreement on UPD,” said Millcreek resident Tom Love, who is anti-incorporation. Jeff Silvestrini, representing those who favor incorporation, said “the one thing I would say to what Tom just said is if the city council of Millcreek City makes a dumb decision they will be voted out by the voters of Millcreek City. If the county council makes a dumb decision for us right now we cannot vote them out.”
The new website features the language that will be on November’s ballot, the feasibility study, as well as frequently asked questions with responses from the county and those on both sides. Silvestrini says the goal of the website is to educate voters.
“This is a civil dialogue. We’re all neighbors; we’re going to be neighbors after this is over. We all want what’s best for our community, we all have different views on that and everyone will have to make up their mind,” said Silvestrini. “The information that the county has assisted us in putting together will help educate people on the issue so they can make an informed decision.”
There are two scheduled community meetings on the issue; one is tonight from 7 to 9 pm at the Canyon Rim Academy at 3005 South 2900 East, and another is scheduled for October 11 at 6 pm at Skyline High School, 3251 East 3760 South.
