(KCPW News) Republican State Senator Curt Bramble, of Provo, is sponsoring a resolution that supports Israel’s “legal, historical, moral, and God-given right” of self-defense, and that calls the country “neither an attacking force nor an occupier of the lands of others.” Bramble says the resolution, the text of which is nearly identical to a similar resolution passed by the Florida Senate in 2012, is part of a wider trend in state legislatures around the country to show support for Israel.
“I think it’s important that the American people be aware, and that their representatives express the support that we have, for the State of Israel – which is what this resolution does.”
The resolution is called the “Standing with Israel Concurrent Resolution.”
Bramble sponsored a similar declaration last year in the form of a joint resolution that, in addition to showing support for Israel, also urged Governor Gary Herbert to conduct a trade mission to the country, something that was delayed because of security risks.
Bramble says that the United States and Israel have mutual enemies.
“I mean when you look at the dissidents, the dictators, the despots in Iran and throughout the Middle East – it’s the same group, the radical Islamic factions, that are trying to destroy Israel and are also attacking the United States.”
KCPW asked Bramble for his views on the debate over former Nebraska Republican Senator Chuck Hagel’s confirmation to be Secretary of Defense, and on the grilling Hagel received from Utah’s Republican Senator Mike Lee during Thursday’s confirmation hearings questioning his support of Israel.
“I think it’s appropriate that Mr. Hagel answer some tough questions,” Bramble said. “He’s made some public comments that are rather disturbing about Israel.”
The Standing with Israel Concurrent Resolution was referred to the Senate Business and Labor Committee on Friday.
