(KCPW News) Governor Gary Herbert held a first-ever after-school faculty meeting on Wednesday. The education summit was meant to shed light on Utah’s goals for education policy. In particular, the governor’s PACE plan was discussed. The PACE plan aims for 66% of all working-age Utahns to hold a post-secondary degree by 2020.
Herbert addressed the audience of educators with opening and closing remarks.
“If you don’t care where you’re going, any road will take you there,” Herbert said. “But here in Utah, we know where we’re going. Today, we’ll be working together to chart the best possible road to reach our educational destination. That’s vitally important to us as we carry on our mission to ensure Utah remains the best place to live, to do business, and to raise a family.”
A panel of education leaders in Utah gave their presentations on the state of education in Utah, followed by an open Q-and-A session with the audience. State superintendent of public instruction Martell Menlove was among the panelists.
“We must continue to make those changes necessary to assure that all children have the literacy and numeracy skills that they need; that high-quality instruction occurs every day in every classroom across the state; and that we accept the accountability we have to the parents, students, elected officials, and others in this process,” said Menlove.
The event was held at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. It was broadcast on live TV and streamed online.
