(KCPW News) A Salt Lake City councilmember and the city’s chief of police sparred earlier this week over a touchy subject: why hundreds of rape kits are unprocessed by the state’s crime lab. The entanglement occurred during a city council work session.

On Wednesday, just a day later, Police Chief Chris Burbank stood alongside Salt Lake County Attorney General Sim Gill and Utah Public Safety Commissioner Keith Squires to announce a new project to catalogue all evidence collected from every rape kit collected by the Salt Lake City Police Department.

KCPW’s Ryan Cunningham has more on this developing story.
