(KCPW News) Salt Lake City has been playing host to the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) this week. The group’s national convention is being held at the Grand America Hotel, and it has brought many impressive luminaries, such as U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro, and U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
A day after Rep. Pelosi—a powerful congressional Democrat—took the stage, Republican Utah Governor Gary Herbert stepped up to address the USHCC on Tuesday. Herbert placed much of his focus on Utah’s ripe economy.
“We have now between 15 and 16 percent of our population of about 3 million people here in the state of Utah which are Hispanic,” Herbert said. “And their impact has been very positive for our economy as their work ethic ripples through the marketplace.”
USHCC President and CEO Javier Palomarez had nothing but good things to say about the host city.
“It’s official Mr. Governor: this is officially the largest gathering of Hispanic business leaders in American history—in Salt Lake City,” Palomarez announced.
Herbert and Palomarez spoke at a luncheon honoring Hispanic Business Enterprise award winners. The thirty-fifth annual convention will wrap up later tonight.
