April 2012: Joel Brown

Joel Brown released his first solo record, “In Retrospect” in May, 2011 under the Spy Hop Records label, a non-profit independent label in Salt Lake City. “In Retrospect” is a collection of deeply personal and autobiographical songs about Brown’s childhood-involving the divorce of his parents and becoming paralyzed from a car accident at age nine.

KCPW has started a new music series based on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert Series. KCPW’s Sounds From The Lounge features local and national bands playing in our member lounge at KCPW’s Library Square studios.

Joel Brown just finished his Sophomore Record “From The Dance Studio” to be released on April 28 through local label, HeyHay Records, before moving to Oakland to join a contemporary dance company.

The album also has important love songs, break up songs etc. Brown’s acoustic-indie-rock sound is similar to Damien Rice, The Swell Season, and Ben Folds.
