Salt Lake City Residents Get First Look at New PBS Documentary

Salt Lake City residents are getting a first look at a PBS documentary that airs next year. Age of Champions, a film about the National Senior Olympics, will preview at the Salt Lake City Main Library on Wednesday with appearances by a local senior athlete as well as the 28-year-old filmmaker Keith Ochwat. Ochwat says the documentary follows several athletes as they train, compete and return home.

Utah High School Band Gets Chance to Perform at Carnegie Hall

What do 23 Utah High School students have in common with The Beatles, Frank Sinatra and Elton John? In a few months they will all have performed at the most famous concert hall in the country, Carnegie Hall. Caleb Chapman’s Crescent Super Band is made up of high schoolers from across the state who are among the youngest performers to get an invite to perform at the venue. Broadway Style Theater Will Bring Changes to Other Blocks of Downtown

Architects, Builder Announced for Performing Arts Center

More pieces are coming together for Salt Lake City’s proposed Utah Performing Arts Center. Wednesday, city officials announced who will be designing and building the $110 million project. HKS Architects, a local firm, along with Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects beat out 14 other bidders to design the Broadway-style theater on Main Street. Michael Vela, managing principal with HKS, says it’s still too early to tell what the theater will look like.

Salt Lake County Council Requests More Information Before Voting on Broadway-Style Theater

Salt Lake City will have to wait a couple more weeks before finding out if the county will help fund a Broadway-style theater downtown. Tuesday the Salt Lake County Council met with city leaders to discuss the project and possibly vote on whether or not the county would foot 20 percent of the total cost. But as KCPW’s Jessica Gail reports county leaders want the issue studied further before any final decisions are made.

Christian Concert Back On Despite Lawsuit Concerns

A Christian concert at Draper City facility will go on despite ongoing threats of a lawsuit. Earlier this week, city leaders agreed to allow singer Michael W. Smith to perform at the city’s Amphitheater on Pioneer Day, days after cancelling the show due to one resident’s concern that it violates separation of church and state. But as KCPW’s Jessica Gail reports, the issue is far from settled.

Art Center in Ephraim Says It’s Victim of Censorship

The Central Utah Art Center in Ephraim believes a recent decision by the city to evict it from its home in the city’s Pioneer Square amounts to censorship. In a letter signed by the mayor and city council, Ephraim City says the center, which is known as CUAC (pronounced “quack”), failed to live up to its commitment to provide arts education to schools. But CUAC Director Adam Bateman says last year, the center taught 500 elementary school students.

After a sold-out run in 2009, the hit Broadway show Wicked has landed once again in Salt Lake City, opening tonight at the Capitol Theatre. The famous musical composed by Stephen Schwartz and based on the novel by Gregory Maguire tells a much different story about the characters first made famous by The Wizard of Oz.
