ICE Says “Cross Check” Operation Leads to Arrest of 54 in Utah

54 convicted and fugitive immigrants in Utah have been arrested following a nationwide operation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Steven Branch, field office director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations, says the six-day procedure brought in more than 3,100 violators nationwide.

Salt Lake County Passes E-Verify Measure

While the Utah legislature made no gains this year in passing legislation mandating businesses use E-Verify, the Salt Lake County Council approved a resolution this week (last week) to make sure businesses in its unincorporated areas are using the system.

Utah’s Guest Worker Law Survives Effort to Repeal

Legislation aimed at repealing Utah’s controversial guest worker law failed to pass out of a Senate committee this morning after nearly two hours of discussion from all sides of the illegal immigration issue. Ashdown Launches Second Senate Bid

Pete Ashdown, founder and CEO of Utah Internet Service Provider XMission announced his second candidacy for the U.S. Senate Friday at the State Capitol, taking on Utah’s senior Senator Orrin Hatch for a second time. Ashdown, who took more than 30 percent of the vote when he challenged Hatch as the Democratic candidate in 2006, says his top priority is tackling the influence of money in government.
