Move to Amend 401k race @ Wallace F. Bennet Federal Building

Giant corporations have given the 1% so much to be thankful for: soaring profits, legislation created just for big business and financial security for us 1%-ers.

And it’s time for us to give back!

Here’s the scene: On September 7th at noon, runners will don business suits and briefcases and go on a mad dash around the city to large corporations that are counter-productive to democracy.

At each site runners will deliver a big thank you from the 1% for all the work corporations have done to enrich us at the expense of everyone else!

The race spotlights Move to Amends’ campaign to pass a city-wide vote in September demanding an amendment that abolishes corporate personhood and states that money does not equal free speech.

War Child free documentary screening @ Broadway Centre Cinemas

War Child free documentary screening @ Broadway Centre Cinemas

The Tanner Humanities Center and Salt Lake Film Society present a screening of the documentary War Child, which co-stars the Tanner Center’s 2013 World Leaders lecturer John Prendergast. War Child is rated PG-13 and tells the story of hip hop artist Emmanuel Jal, a former child soldier in Sudan’s brutal civil war who now works to bring peace to his country and build schools throughout Africa. This screening is free and open to the public, with no tickets required to attend.

In the early 1980s at the age of seven, Jal was swept into Sudan’s civil war, becoming one of 10,000 child soldiers conscripted on both sides of the two decade long conflict. After being forced to do many unimaginably horrible things, he escaped the soldier’s camp and trekked for four months through Africa. He was eventually found and adopted by the now legendary British aid worker Emma McCune who had married Sudanese guerrilla commander Riek Machar and convinced him to not employ child soldiers. Shortly after she adopted Jal, McCune died in a suspicious car crash, leaving Emmanuel “orphaned” once again. Jal rose from ruthless child soldier to refugee to rap star. He found his own redemption and life mission through a message of peace that represents one of the 21st centuries’ most inspiring and hopeful journeys, and a metaphor for the broader African predicament.

Human rights activist John Prendergast will give the Tanner Humanities Center’s annual World Leaders Lecture, titled “A Changing Africa,” on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at 11 AM in Libby Gardner hall, 1375 E. Presidents Circle. This lecture is free and open to the public.
