- The organization promoting the event must be a qualified 501 (c) (3) charity or political subdivision.
- The event cannot promote a religious organization or individual.

Making the Case Against Gene Patents: an Evening with ACLU Women’s Rights Project Attorney Sandra Park
Sandra S. Park is a Senior Staff Attorney in the ACLU Women’s Rights Project. At WRP, Sandra engages in litigation, policy advocacy, and public education at the national, state, and local levels to advance the rights and civil liberties of women and girls. She represented twenty medical organizations, geneticists, and patients in a groundbreaking lawsuit challenging patents granted on two human genes related to breast and ovarian cancer, resulting in a unanimous 2013 U.S. Supreme Court ruling invalidating gene patents.

Food Day is a nationwide celebration of healthy, affordable, and sustainably produced food. The 100 Mile Meal is the culminating event for Salt Lake City’s celebration of Food Day.
Did you know the average meal in the United States travels 1,500 miles from the farm-gate to your plate? The 100 Mile Meal is an opportunity for Salt Lake City to celebrate its local food, farms, and economy, while illustrating a commitment to sustainable agriculture.
The meal will highlight seasonal ingredients sourced from farms within 100 miles of Mayor Becker’s Salt Lake office. The rest of the evening with feature the national premier of Green Living Project’s film short about the New Roots Refugee Agriculture Program, and speeches by the filmmaker and Mayors of Salt Lake County and Salt Lake City.
Proceeds from the 100 Mile Meal will benefit Slow Food Utah’s Micro-Grant Program, which supports local food-related projects, especially small-scale food growers and producers, community innovators, and educators.
The Loop Utah Movement will be welcoming Dr. Juliette Sterkens, a renowned audiologist and advocate with the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA), to celebrate Better Speech and Hearing month this May. The two-day event on May 2 – 3 will include informative presentations on the benefits of Hearing Loop technology and how to build effective advocacy campaigns in order spread more awareness throughout communities.
Please join New Roots with the International Rescue Committee of Salt Lake City for a Farm Raising on May 3rd. Help refugee farmers and gardeners get ready for a productive season by volunteering and donating tools and seeds from noon to 3pm. Stay with us after 3 for food and refreshments and a chance to meet the farmers and hear their inspiring stories.
