- Utah Senators Make Case for Special Legislative Session

Two Utah senators joined local elected officials to meet with Governor Jon Huntsman on Wednesday to make their case for a special session, which lawmakers would use to study the controversial Jordan School District Split. Given the new boundaries, Senator Michael Waddoups presented the governor with data showing that the new East side district would be able to lower property taxes under the proposal, while forcing the remaining West side to raise taxes.

Two Republicans in the Utah House have joined three Democrats in filing an ethics complaint that won't likely earn them any brownie points from Republican leadership. Representative Steve Mascaro wants the House Ethics Committee to investigate whether Mark Walker offered his rival, Richard Ellis, a raise to drop out of the treasurer's race.

Representative Sheryl Allen of Davis County is the only seated Republican lawmaker on a list of plaintiffs suing over the constitutionality of an omnibus education bill passed during this year's legislative session. Allen says she is moving forward despite worries of political backlash from House leadership.

- Speaker of the House Reflects on Legislative Session and Prepares for Campaign

Following a 45-day legislative session in which Utah lawmakers tackled high profile issues like immigration, health system reform, and teacher compensation, many would expect them to take a breather. However with 2008 being an election year, most public servants hoping for reelection can't afford that luxury.That certainly goes for Republican Greg Curtis, Speaker of Utah's House of Representatives, who once again faces a challenge from Democrat Jay Seegmiller. Curtis defeated Seegmiller by just 20 votes in 2006 for Salt Lake County's District 49 seat.
KCPW's Eric Ray spoke with Curtis about the challenges of the 2008 session and plans for his re-election campaign.
