According to a new biography, Brigham Young “was viewed by his followers as an indispensable protector and by his opponents as a theocratic, treasonous heretic.” Either way, Brigham Young left an indelible footprint on the American West. Religious studies scholar John Turner has written a provocative portrait of Young and on Tuesday, he joins us to talk about what the New Yorker is calling “a definitive biography of Mormonism’s greatest activist and apostle.”

It’s been over a month since NASA’s Curiosity rover landed on Mars, an achievement that stretches our knowledge about the Red Planet and, more broadly, helps define who we are in the universe. On Tuesday, we talk about why Mars matters to science, innovation and humanity at large.
