Today on the program, we hear about what the passage of the Community Renewable Energy Act (HB411) means for Utah. Salt Lake City, Park City, Summit County, Cottonwood Heights and Moab have all committed to transitioning to a net-100% renewable electricity portfolio. Without the buy-in of the state’s electric utility monopoly, Rocky Mountain Power, those commitments would amount to little more than wish lists. “Net-100%” here means that Rocky Mountain Power needs to produce at least as much electricity from renewable sources like wind and solar as the cities that have made this pledge use. HB411 creates a framework for that to happen. But what does that mean for power customers in these cities? And what about the long-term transition away from coal-fired power production?
