The latest battle brewing over the future of Utah’s coal industry

Last month, Richmond California passed an ordinance to ban the storage and handling of coal within their city limits. Officials there say they’re concerned about the health impacts of coal dust on their community. But the Utah coal industry, which ships more than a million tons of coal a year out of Richmond, is planning a legal challenge to that ban, and this week requested $500,000 from the Utah legislature to fund that case.
