In the Hive

The regional toll of an earlier pandemic, and coronavirus’s outsized impact on the Navajo Nation

Play

Today on In the Hive we take a look back at how Utah experienced the 1918 Flu pandemic that killed as many as 50 million people worldwide. That pandemic had a disproportionate impact on the Navajo Nation, and it would appear that history is repeating itself. We’ll hear from a Navajo author and journalist about her community’s experience with coronavirus.

Guests:
Dr. Gregory Smoak, associate professor of history at the University of Utah
Dr. Brian Cannon, department chair of history at Brigham Young University
Sunnie R. Clahchischiligi, journalist, writer and doctoral student at the University of New Mexico
