(KCPW News) Not surprisingly, Republican Utah leaders reacted with scorn yesterday upon learning the U.S. Supreme Court upheld most of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. On our show, U.S. Senator Mike Lee weighed in on the court’s decision, and why he thinks it’s a short-lived victory for the law. Then we talked with Democratic State Senator Gene Davis, who sits on the Utah Legislature’s health system reform task force.
Then we were joined by Democratic congressional candidate Jay Seegmiller. The former state lawmaker served one term in the Utah House of Representatives after defeating the House Speaker back in 2008, but fell to his GOP opponent in 2010, tough year for Utah Dems. We talked with him about his job creation plans and strategy for winning Utah’s 2nd congressional district.
Finally, in Utah, we frequently hear about the importance of oil and gas development to rural economies, especially from politicians who call on the federal government to loosen restrictions on energy development. But a new report released by Sportsmen for Responsible Energy Development says recreation and tourism are more important to those economies. Tom Allen is research director for Southwick Associates, which conducted the study, and Bob Dibblee is a local representative of Trout Unlimited. We spoke with them both about the report and what it means.
