Counties vie for Inland Port satellites, San Juan County asks for Bears Ears restoration, and Legal advice for Utah’s ‘troubled teen’ industry

A group of government economic development leaders and rural business interests took the chance to extol the many benefits a satellite port would bring to their ailing economies during the Utah Inland Port Authority Board’s quarterly meeting on Wednesday. Proponents of the satellite port model say it would address some of the concerns environmental advocates have raised in opposition to the project planned for Salt Lake City while delivering an economic jolt to rural Utah communities.
With fewer than 50 days remaining before Inauguration Day, the San Juan County Commission passed a resolution Tuesday calling upon President-elect Joe Biden “to take immediate action to restore the Bears Ears National Monument” once he assumes office. President Donald Trump reduced Bears Ears National Monument to 15% of its original size the following year, citing local opposition to the monument as one of the leading reasons for his decision.
And Utah’s Disability Law Center announced in October that it would investigate the state’s “troubled-teen” treatment facilities, an industry that has thrived here for decades. National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs, in turn, held a call offering advice on how to respond, including hiring a lawyer and reducing paper trails.
