The Hinckley Institute of Politics recently hosted a panel that looks at Utah’s Opioid Epidemic and explores potential solutions in addressing the problem.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, in 2016 – more than 63,000 people died from drug overdoses around the country, and nearly two-thirds of those deaths involved a prescription or illicit opioid. That same year in Utah, 635 people died from drug overdose. Several Utah Counties are suing drug manufacturers over opioid deaths, and the state of Utah is also looking at its own lawsuit or settlement with pharmaceutical companies.
The panelists include:
Adam Cohen, CEO of Odyssey House of Utah; Dr. Jennifer Plumb, Medical Director of Utah Naloxone; Angela Stander Lo, Opioid Overdose Prevention Coordinator at the Utah Department of Health.; and the conversation was moderated by Lieutenant Governor Spencer Cox.
