The Hinckley Institute Radio Hour (Original Air Date: April 7, 2021) — This week on the program, sitting members of the Utah Legislature’s transportation committees discuss current policy, issues facing the state’s infrastructure and how we can more efficiently move people throughout the state.
The White House recently unveiled a $2 trillion infrastructure plan that would set aside $650 billion for roads, bridges, railways and ports as the administration signals its interest in focusing on updating and expanding transportation systems. This new federal goal comes as Utah is already awash in federal, one-time COVID-19 relief funds and as the state sets aside a record amount for state transportation in this year’s legislative session. These extra funds are part of the over $1 billion influx into state projects such as a new rapid transit bus line and the Utah Transit Authority’s plan to double-track and electrify the Frontrunner.
This week’s panel of Utah legislators will discuss funding these expansions in transportation, new state projects and how we can best prepare for Utah’s inevitable growth. The panelists include Rep. Suzanne Harrison, Sen. Anne Millner, Sen. Kathleen Riebe and House Minority Whip Mike Schultz. Moderating today’s discussion is Hannah Pack, graduate student and President of Point B, the University of Utah’s transportation student group.
