Salary negotiations for SLC school teachers reach an impasse

Play

Last week, around 200 teachers in the Salt Lake City School District staged a walkout of a meeting of the board of education. That happened on the heels of two months of salary negotiations between the teachers union and the district – negotiations that have now stalled. In the background is a bigger picture about how education is funded in Utah, and how teachers are retained. The regional planning agency Envision Utah recently conducted a survey of teachers in Utah and found a troubling fact: more teachers than ever are leaving the profession, and that’s happening even as the student population in Utah is booming. One reason teachers surveyed said they were leaving: low pay.

Today on the show, two conversations about the path forward for education funding in Utah.

Guests:
Yándry Chatwin, Executive Director of Communications, Salt Lake City School District
James Tobler, President, Salt Lake Education Association
