Today on In the Hive we dive deep on one bill under consideration in the waning days of the 2020 Utah legislative session. HB328 requests an update to a study from 2002 that examined the feasibility of diverting water from the Green River in eastern Utah to the Wasatch Front. The measure’s sponsor, Brigham City Republican Rep. Joel Ferry, says the idea is to prepare for future population growth and to make use of Utah’s allocation of water from the 1922 Colorado River Compact. But environmentalists say the proposal isn’t necessary because water conservation – and the ongoing conversion of water from agricultural to municipal use – should provide more than enough for future growth.
